Candidates need to know how the rules of interviewing might chill a conversation within an otherwise warm interview session and managers need to know these regulations, so they do not cross the line as to what is acceptable and what isn’t.

Managing legality during the job interview process is a slippery, treacherous slope. Here’s an example: On the resume, the candidate indicates she speaks Japanese. In a casual comment over a cup of coffee, the manager comments, “I’m impressed! How did you learn to speak Japanese?” BOOM! Potential legal exposure! A question that infers a foreign address can be considered discriminatory*.
